Why Do We Celebrate Earth Day 2023 in Australia ?

Earth Day highlights the current global threats facing our planet and to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. The major threat posed is climate change. Mass coral bleaching is devastating the Reef, and is a stern reminder of the negative impact of climate change on our planet. Earth Day 2023 is observed to raise awareness of global climate change as people come together to act to save our mother - mother Earth!

The History of Earth Day

The idea for Earth Day came about when US Senator Gaylord Nelson witnessed the effect of the Santa Barbara oil spill in 1969.

At the time, the Santa Barbara oil spill was the largest disaster of its kind in American history. Within a ten-day period, an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 barrels of crude oil spilled into the Channel and onto the beaches of Santa Barbara County in Southern California.

Nelson announced the idea of a national 'Teach-In on the Environment' to raise awareness of similar issues, with the first Earth Day taking place in 1970.

Earth Day 2023 will be observed by billions of people across the globe in over 190 countries.

Earth Day 2023 celebrations worldwide aim to utilise educational programs which will inform people about how they can protect the environment, and look after the world’s natural resources. Last year, Australia focused on the Great Barrier Reef and raised awareness of the mass coral bleaching - a result of rising sea temperatures. Bleaching events were organised in an effort to significantly reduce this damage caused as a direct result of climate change.

How Do People Celebrate Earth Day?

Every year, over a billion people commemorate Earth Day, with many taking part in events in their local communities or organising their own observances.

Some ideas of ways to celebrate Earth Day in 2023 are:

  • brainstorm ways to be greener in your day-to-day activities;

  • plant a tree;

  • organise a litter-pick;

  • donate to environmental charities;

  • learn more about conservation and local wildlife.

By doing some adjustments to our daily life can make a huge impact on our planet's future, doesn't matter how big or small your changes are, as long as we all do our little part.
